The Gay Freedom Day Celebration, now San Francisco Pride, was first held in 1970 in the city to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, named for the response to a police raid of a New York gay bar. Held the last weekend in June, it includes multiple events celebrating LGBTQ communities, features hundreds of parade contingents and in some years has drawn crowds estimated at 500,000.
