Telegraph Hill

Grace Marchant, right, and her daughter Valetta moved to the city in 1936, and both worked building Liberty Ships in Sausalito during World War II. Grace, born in South Dakota in 1886, began beautifying then-garbage-strewn Telegraph Hill in 1949, eventually creating the lush garden named for her. After her death, at 96, the city bought her property to save it from developers.
