Mission

Peter Tamony, historian and folk-etymologist with a passion for documenting street slang, is pictured here with his sister Kathleen. Peter was born in San Francisco in 1902 and lived in the same Mission District flat from age 3 until his death in 1985. Much of his voluminous language collection came from what he heard around the neighborhood.
